Treating Computer Viruses

A PC / computer virus is a typically malicious program written to spread itself easily from computer to computer. Its sole purpose is to infect, corrupt and ultimately breakdown a computer system and any network it may be a part of.

An apparatus includes a server connected between a first computer network in which a computer virus may generate and a second computer network or a computer system as an object of security protection. In the apparatus, a collection unit collects irregular data representing a possibility of generation of the computer virus that may attack the server.

A decision unit decides whether the computer virus is being generated on the computer network in accordance with the irregular data. A notification unit notifies the second computer network or the computer system of generation of the computer virus when the decision unit decides that the computer virus is being generated.

Computer virus are software programs that cause harm to computer systems by disturbing the programs or data in the main memory or on the disk drives. They disturb by deleting files, duplicating files, or even srambling data in the files. They normally get into a computer system via the network when users download files from other systems or read emails that are contaminated with viruses.

If your computer came with virus protection, you may continue to use it. However, be sure to update it at least weekly. As an alternative, you may use Norton AntiVirus, the virus protection package available to all students, faculty and staff free of charge.

The boot sequence during operating system startup must be rearranged such that as a rule the system is started first from the hard disk (or from the network) and only then from an external medium (floppy disk, CD-ROM; cf. S4.84 Use of BIOS security mechanisms). In addition, an emergency floppy disk must be created for every available computer type, in order to allow a successful cleanup in the event of a computer virus infection (cf. S6.24 Creating a PC emergency floppy disk).

If a new computer virus does cause damage despite the precautions, a backup must be used. Data backups must therefore be created on a regular basis (cf. S6.32 Regular data backups). When data backups are reloaded, care must be taken that no files infected by the computer virus are restored to the system as a result.
